2024 BMW 5-Series vs. i5: What's the Difference? (2024)

  • BMW's Super Bowl ad features Christopher Walken and the BMW i5 electric sedan.
  • The i5 EV is closely related to the new BMW 5-series sedan, which is powered by a gas engine.
  • Here we're breaking down the differences between the two models in terms of price, specs, and performance.

By now you're probably familiar with the BMW 5-series, a mid-size luxury sedan that's been around for many decades and gone through many generations. But the 5-series that's featured in BMW's 2024 Super Bowl ad isn't actually a 5-series at all, it's the new electric spinoff that BMW calls i5. Like the i7 and i4, the new EV looks nearly identical to its gas-powered stablemate, but there are some notable differences between the two in terms of prices, specifications, and performance.

Price and Trim Levels

As you might expect, you'll pay more for the i5 than for the 5-series. The gas-powered 5-series lineup starts off with the rear-wheel-drive 530i, which starts at $58,895 and offers 255 horsepower. The i5 EV kicks things off with the rear-wheel-drive $67,795 eDrive40 model, which has a 335-horsepower electric motor.

So far, the gasoline 5-series only offers two powertrain options, the four-cylinder 530i and the six-cylinder 540i, which starts at $65,895. All-wheel drive is an option on the 530i and standard on the 540i.

The highest-performance version of the 5-series—for now, at least—is actually the i5, which offers a significantly more powerful M60 configuration. It starts at $85,095 and has two electric motors that combine for all-wheel drive and 593 horsepower in total.

Performance and Acceleration

We've only tested one version of the new 5-series so far, the 2024 530i xDrive sedan with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and all-wheel drive. This represents the least powerful model in the lineup, and in our testing it accelerated to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. The six-cylinder 540i xDrive, which has 375 hp from a turbocharged 3.0-liter, should be quicker. We haven't tested the electric i5 yet, but we expect it to be even swifter, as we estimate a 60 mph time of 5.0 seconds for the rear-drive eDrive40 and 3.5 seconds for the all-wheel-drive M60.

Efficiency and Range

It's an apples to oranges comparison to line up the gas-powered 5-series and i5 in terms of efficiency and range. But we can still give you the numbers. The EV is obviously the more efficient of the two, with the i5 rated at between 85 and 105 MPGe combined and the 5-series ranging between 28 and 30 mpg combined. In our testing, the 530i xDrive achieved a real-world 75-mph highway fuel economy result of 35 mpg.

Driving range is perhaps the more applicable number for many people. The i5 is rated by the EPA to go between 240 and 295 miles on a charge, but we haven't yet had a chance to test the i5 ourselves. Based on our real-world highway fuel economy results for the 530i, the 5-series can travel up to 550 miles on a full tank of gas.

BMW i5 Touring

The 5-series and i5 lineups will continue to expand later this year. For the 2025 model year, BMW has already announced a plug-in-hybrid version of the 5-series called the 550e, and there's also a new all-wheel-drive version of the i5 coming called the xDrive40e. BMW also revealed a wagon version of both the 5-series and i5 called the Touring that will be sold in Europe.

The big Kahuna on the horizon is the high-performance M5, which has historically sat atop the 5-series in terms of price, power, and prestige. We're hearing that it will be a plug-in hybrid with a V-8 gasoline engine and up to 738 horsepower, and there are even rumors that the wagon version of the M5 could come to the U.S. Stay tuned for more details to come.
