Driving Times from Hobart
Hobart to Launceston Via Midlands – A1 – 2 hours, 20 minutes.
It is worth leaving the A1 to visit the towns of Oatlands and Ross for a touch of history. At Perth, look for the signs to Launceston Airport and Evandale. Evandale is a fine example of a Tasmanian Colonial township.
Hobart to Port Arthur Via Eaglehawk Neck – A9 – 1 hour, 15 minutes.
Pass the Airport and head for Sorell. turn onto the A9. Stop at the Eaglehawk Neck Lookout before descending to Pirates Bay. It is on the left as an alternative route. Lufra Hotel at Eaglehawk Neck is great to stay – also has a great bar and dining room with views. Well worth it.
Hobart to Strahan Via the Derwent Valley and Queenstown – A10 – 6 hours.
Allow a full day if you want to drive right through. Follow the Derwent River all the way to its source at Derwent Bridge. The Derwent Bridge Hotel is an excellent place for lunch. Great country pub.
Hobart to Freycinet Via Orford and Swansea – A3 – 2 hours, 15 minutes.
Follow the A3 to Sorell, then right to the east coast. After you hit the coast at Orford, it is splendid ocean scenery all the way to Freycinet.
Hobart to Cradle Mountain Via Midlands – A1 – 5 hours.
Head north from Hobart on the A1, Heritage Highway. It is a longer drive than it looks. Allow a full day and stop off in Ross, Longford and Sheffield on
Driving Times from Launceston
Launceston to Hobart Via Midlands – A1 – 2 hours, 20 minutes.
At Breadalbane, look for the signs to Launceston Airport and Evandale. Evandale is a fine example of a Tasmanian Colonial township. Then keep going south and cut back to rejoin the Heritage Highway at Nile. It is worth leaving the A1 to visit the towns of Ross and Oatlands for a touch of history.
Launceston to Port Arthur Via Midlands & Eaglehawk Neck – A1 & A9 – 4 hours.
To bypass Hobart, take the B31 after Oatlands and drop down the Coal River Valley to Richmond. Then cut through to Sorell and on to the Tasman Peninsula. Stop at the Eaglehawk Neck Lookout before descending to Pirates Bay. It is on the left as an alternative route. Well worth it.
Launceston to Strahan Via Cradle Mountain – A1 & A10 – 6 hours.
From Deloraine, take the road to Mole Creek and then across Cethana Dam to join the C132 Cradle Mountain Road to cut through to the A10 Murchison Highway. At Zeehan, take the B27 to Strahan.
Launceston to Freycinet Via St. Marys and Bicheno – A1, A4 &A3 – 2 hours, 15 minutes.
Head south on the A1, then turn east onto the A4 Esk Highway to Fingal and St. Marys. Cross the Elephant Pass (stop for pancakes – on the right at the top of the Pass) then take the A3 south to Bicheno and on to Freycinet.
Launceston to Cradle Mountain Via Sheffield – A1 & B13 – 2 hours, 20 minutes.
Take the A1 towards Devonport. At Elizabethtown, turn left onto the B13 & B14 to Sheffield. Cut across to the C132 Cradle Mountain Road.
Launceston to Stanley via Devonport and Burnie – A1 & A2 – 3 hours.
Once you hit the coast at Devonport it is wonderful Bass Strait coastal scenery all the way. Take the waterfront scenic road between Ulverstone and Penguin.
