15 2002 Funeral is 10 am Wednesday in Westmoreland Chapel Visitation is 5-7 pm Tuesday at Westmoreland Funeral Home NEW BERN Mrs Elizabeth Warren Dunn the mother of Frank Dunn Jr and Penelope Dunn Love both of Charlotte died unexpectedly at her home in New Bern on November 5 She was 90 years old Bom November 9 1911 to the late Thomas Davis Warren and Mary Stevenson Warren both of New Bern she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church A graveside service was held November 7 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery followed by a reception celebrating her life at the New Bern home of her other surviving daughter Betsy Sprague She is also survived by her husband of 67 years Frank Hughes Dunn Twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive her She will be remembered by family and friends for her great wit intelligence and lifetime love of literature In lieu of flowers her family requests that memorial donations be made in her honor to the New Bern-Craven County Public Library Anniston Alabama May 10 1917 his family moved to Hickory during the Great Depression There he spent his youth working odd jobs and learning to hunt and fish with his dad As a young couple he and his wife began their family in Greensboro In 1946 the family moved to Kings Mountain where the roots were deeply set Bill Simpson ran Kings Mountain Machine Works for thirty-three years before generously and lovingly giving his part to his son He always lived his life and his faith with integrity He leaves many friends who will remember him Survivors include his son Simpson Jr two grandchildren and the late William George Verran and Erma Dell Dick Verran She was a 1959 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte NC and a 1962 graduate of Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing She began a career in nursing in 1962 and became oncology certified and kept her certification throughout her life having worked with Spartanburg Regional Home Health and Hospice She was an active member of St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church where she sat in the Adoration Chapel served on all rings of the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women was South Carolina Catholic Woman of the Year in 1982 had served as chairman and co-chairman of the South Carolina Catholic Women's Convention and the 72nd Annual Convention was dedicated to Leslie in April 2002 She was a member and President of the Pastoral Council served on the Finance Advisory Committee was a member of the Church Choir for over 25 years a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Circle for over 20 years had served as President of St Over Circle and worked with numerous fund raising projects Mrs Woppman served as Chairman of the Women's Cancer Task Force President of the Board of Directors for FACT Cancer Association and was Volunteer of the Year a member of the United Way an instructor with the American Red Cross and received the Outstanding Volunteer Award a member of the Spartanburg Coalition for Better Health Hospice Nurse of the Year Who's Who in American Nursing from 1990-94 and Who in American Professional Women She was also a volunteer with Mobile Meals She was nominated for Jefferson Award and was the recipient of the Alma and TR Garrison Health Person of the Year for Spartanburg County Surviving are her husband Richard Alan Woppman Sr of the home two daughters and sons-in-law Kellie Ann Woppman Vega and husband Freddie Vega of Wingate NC and Christine Marie Woppman Seas and husband Jason Seas Sr of Pauline one son and daughter-in-law Richard Alan Woppman Jr and wife Christy Jones Woppman of Hawkins Scruggs and was the husband of Mrs Mary Sue Robbins Hawkins Mr Hawkins retired as Assistant Plant Manager of Springs Industries Lancaster Plant was a member of Second Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon Superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the Finance Committee Mr Hawkins is survived by 3 daughters Mrs Harriett Neal and her husband Jimmy of Kershaw Mrs Glenda Reeves and her husband Deame of Chester and Mrs Libby Best and her husband Bob of Florence SC 3 sisters Mrs Hazel Strickland of Rutherford NC Mrs Jane Camp and Miss Pat Scruggs both of Huntersville NC 8 Avenue died November 15 2002 A native of Concord NC she was the daughter of the late Harry Benson and Frances Goodson Hopkins and the wife of the late Dr William Russel Floyd Sr a former prominent physician with Cabarrus Memorial Hospital Formerly a resident of Concord NC until 1981 she was very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Concord and many charities and civic activities She studied music at The Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore MD for many years where she was training to be a concert pianist As an astute business woman she became involved in the ownership and management of The Floyd Mortuary from 1971 until present Her lifelong interests were in music and the performing arts which she supported in Spartanburg and throughout the state She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg Surviving are two sons Russel Floyd Jr and wife Susan White and their two daughters Hunter and Whitley and Andrew Gordon Floyd and wife Karen Kanes and their two Dr George Raad and Metrolina Medical Research are currently searching for volunteers to participate in a 29-day research study of an investigational medication for osteoarthritis To quality you must: Have arthritis in your hip or knee Be between the ages of 40 and 75 years old Have already been diagnosed with osteoarthritis Require either over-the-counter or prescription onalgesics (pain medications) for at least 60 of the past 90 days ROCK HILL Mr Edwin 'Eddie' Charles Freed Jr 83 of 840 McDow Dr died Friday November 15 202 at Piedmont Medical Center He was a native of Centre Valley PA The graveside service will be 3 pm Monday at Grandview Memorial Park Mr Freed was the son of the late Edwin Charles Freed Sr and the late Ida Hottle Freed He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church He was a retired operations manager with Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co and was recreational director at Joslin Park for many years He played with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1942 setting a Major League recod with 4 hits in his first game the Rock Hill Chiefs in 1947 and played one year with the Charlotte Hornets Baseball Team in 1950 He retired in 1951 He was an avid golfer and was inducted into the York County Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 He was a US Army Veteran of WWII He was the widower of Edna Freed He is survived by his daughter Rita Cater of Fort Mill SC and two grandchildren Caroline Cater and Will Cater Visitation will be pm on Sunday November 17 2002 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel 2133 Ebenezer Road Rock Hill and other times at the home of his daughter Rita Cater 1866 Pleasant Rd Fort Mill SC Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care 325 Oakland Ave Rock Hill SC 29720 Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel is in charge of gQ Qualified candidates will receive the following at no cost: Study- Related Study Medication ST Study -Related Physical Exams Study -Related 1 Study-Related Laboratory Tests Financial compensation of up to $200 for your time and travel If you would like more information and to determine if you would qualify please call: Metrolina Medical Research 704-5276672 1700 Abbey Place Suite 209 Charlotte NC 28209 5.
