A gutsy qualifier who has won seven matches thus far in this event, Koubek will meet Frenchman Se-bastien Grosjean, who advanced with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 win over Jim Courier. Auto Racing Time ran out on Dale Earnhardt Jr. as Matt Kenseth picked up a victory in the Auto Club 300 Busch Series NASCAR race at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Earnhardt, the defending series champion and current points leader, got caught up in a wreck and charged back from a lap down to finish third, trailing Kenseth and Jeff Burton across the finish line as the 150-lap race finished under caution. Kenseth, who finished second to Earnhardt in last year's standings, still trails the leader by 95 points after the first 10 races of 1999.

Rookie Juan Montoya put his car on the pole for today's CART Bosch Grand Prix at Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway. College Football A Florida State football player was arrested ion charges of attempted murder after he and another man allegedly drove up to a house in Tallahassee, and opened fire in an attempt Jo settle a feud.
