Funeral services for Pete were held in Springfield, Thursday, Dec. 29, at Demaine Funeral Home, with burial at the Quantico National Military Cemetery, accompanied by the U.S. Capitol Police Honor Guard, who were present for the visitations, served as military escorts, and were the pallbearers for the funeral and burial. Pete was born June 2, in the village of Newry, S.C.
His beloved parents, Eddie Devoe and Ruby Blackston, preceded him in death, as well as his muchloved grandparents, Crawford Harrison and Lala Fendley Dyar. Pete left his hometown of Seneca, S.C., to study at the National Radio and Broadcasting School in Washington, D.C., in 1958. He began work as a U.S. Capitol eveningshift policeman in 1959, enabling him to attend school during the day. That was the beginning of a 30-year career with the Capitol Police.
When Pete retired in 1989, he had risen from private to chief inspector in command of the United States Senate detail. Throughout Pete's illustrious career, he met and escorted world heads of state, and sports, entertainment and Hollywood celebrities. He was present for the inaugurations of Presidents John F. Kennedy through G.H.W. Bush.
Perhaps his most famous assignment, from its historical perspective, was being named as the head of security for the Watergate hearings. He earlier served his country during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Staten Island, N.Y., where he was the special services director. In 1974, Pete graduated from the National FBI Academy at Quantico United States Marine Base in a prestigious program that trained select policemen from throughout the United States and worldwide. In 1977, he fulfilled his father's desire to see all of his children college educated, by receiving a degree in criminal justice from George Mason University. Prior to going to Washington, Pete served as the women's basketball coach at Anderson College, as well as the men's baseball coach, while attending Anderson as a student.
Pete had a lifelong love for sports, and it was through the American Legion Baseball Team, Post where he was one of the team's two pitchers, that he formed a 57-year relationship with his brother-in-law, Harry Hamilton. Pete was also an avid golfer, devoting his services of security for the U.S. Kemper Open until ill health prevented his doing so. He always escorted the final four golfers to the Kemper Tent. Mr.
Blackston served on the executive committee of HEROES for 19 years, devoting much time, effort and energy into the success of an organization that helps the children of fallen police officers and firefighters, particularly with college scholarships. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was gifted with a quick wit and ability to make people laugh and enjoy life. Most importantly, he knew Jesus Christ as his Savior. The family respectfully requests that memorials for James O.

Concord, N.C. Mr. Ralph P. Mullinax age 82, a resident of Concord, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 3.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Carolina Memorial Park, officiated by the Rev. Reta Steck. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at Carolina Memorial Park. After graduating from what is now Southern Wesleyan University at Central, S.C., Mr.
Mullinax came to Concord from his birthplace, Cateechee, S.C., to teach at the Stonewall Jackson Training School. While on staff at the state institution, he installed the first Boy Scout troop. This pilot program was successful and the Boy Scouts of America offered Mullinax an opportunity join that organization professionally. For several years, he represented the Scouts in six North Carolina counties, establishing and nurturing Boy Scouts of America troops by speaking to civic clubs, raising funds, recruiting and training leaders. Mullinax was honored in several of these communities for this work.
He was vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. In the late '40s, Ralph Mullinax entered the auto, fire and casualty insurance business and for many years operated the Mullinax Insurance Agency in Kannapolis and Myrtle Beach. In association with his brother-in-law Bob Bogle, he began an agency, in Concord, which he later sold to Mr. Bogle. After leaving the insurance agency business in the late '70s, he represented Prentiss Hall in marketing their loose-leaf services to attorneys, CPAs and financial institutions in the Charlotte area.
In 1979, his first year with Prentiss Hall, he was selected to be a member of the President's Club. In the late '80s, he continued his business career self-employed insurance inspector, before being stricken with Parkinson's disease. During a lifetime of community service, Ralph was a founding member of the Rowan County Rescue Squad, using his first-aid skills in emergency situations. Believing that car racing promoted safe driving, when staged at racetracks, rather than on back roads, Mullinax supported the construction of tracks on which to hold these events. At the time, it was not popular for businessmen to publicly expose this viewpoint, but he worked with racing pioneers in the Concord area to secure support in the business community for the sport.
As a member of the Civil Air Patrol, he and other volunteers flew search, rescue and mercy missions of Charlotte's Douglas Airport, picking up patients in small North Carolina communities and flying them to metropolitan hospitals for special treatment. Ralph was a member of the Stokes Masonic Lodge in Concord, the York Rite Bodies in Concord and the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Concord, and the Lester Coltrane Sunday school class. Mr. Mullinax maintained strong friendships with members of other congregations, particularly in the textiles communities, helping them achieve their building goals.
For the past several years Mullinax has been a resident of First Assembly Living Center in Concord, N.C., where he received loving care from Christian caregivers. His wife, Camilla, Bogle Mullinax, and an daughter Danielle predeceased him, as well as parents Ralph and Margaret Mullinax of Greenville, S.C. Mr. Mullinax is survived by a son, Ralph "Skipper" Mullinax III, and wife Susie of Ponte Vedre, daughter, Corrine M. Barnes, and grandson Taylor Barnes, of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Wally Mullinax, and wife Helen of Greenville, S.C.; brother-in-law Bob Bogle of Concord; and numerous nieces and nephews.
