Hospice surrounded by his family The family would like to thank Duke Hospice for their many acts of kindness during his lengthy illness Joe Pope and Bill Medley were special friends to Charles and Martha Mr Gurganus was bom July 19 1925 in Franklin County to the late On wood Battle and Mary Tilgh-man Gurganus When he was a young boy his family moved to Durham Charles attended Durham City Schools and Durham County Schools He graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1943 He entered the US Army Air Corps in October 1943 at Keesler Field Miss and later Amarillo Air Field Tfexas He served on Tinian and Saipan in the Pacific Theatre during WWII He was a Staff Sergeant when he was honorably discharged after the war In 1946 Charles entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1950 from the school of journalism While at the University he played baseball for the varsity team Charles also played for several semi-pro teams in North Carolina and in other states Charles was a member of the monogram club at the University Charles worked for the Herald Times newspaper as a sports reporter in Rock Hill SC after he graduated from the University He had to return home in early 1951 because of family illness He worked for IG Harris Construction Co for a short period of time He was then employed with Liggett Myers Tbbacco Co He held several executive positions with Liggett Myers and retired as Manager of Tbbacco Processing and Printing He was preceded in death by his parents his brothers Eugene Gurganus Morrison Gurganus and sister Hilda Inscoe Surviving are his wife of 53 years Martha sister Elizabeth Hart brothers Joseph and wife Patsy Robert and wife Debra and many nieces and nephews Charles was a member of Alders gate United Methodist Church A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 pm in the Howerton Bryan Funeral Chapel the Rev Thomas Holtsclaw officiating Burial with military rites will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Duke Community Hospice 4321 Medical Park Drive Suite 101 Durham NC 27704 or to Aldersgate United Methodist Church 1320 Umstead Road Durham NC 27704 The family will receive friends at Howerton Bryan Funeral Home Friday from 12:30 to 1:45 pm Margaret Dwell Larrab DURHAM Margaret played competitive tennis well into his eighties Mr Few and his wife the former Shirley Dana of Pinehurst who survives him celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in November 2007 Tbgether they had three children: Dana Few Pope and husband Tbdd Randolph Few Jr and Louise Few Rollins and husband Steed Jr all of whom survive him His love for Duke ran deep but the real joy in his life was his devoted family particularly his eight grandchildren All of whom live in Durham This provided as he was known to his grandchildren with the opportunity and special privilege of having regular interaction with his gang-of-eight during their years He has left his grandchildren with cherished and lifelong memories of a loving and generous grandfather who will be greatly missed but whose love and influence will be ever present He was so proud and happy knowing that his first grandchild Mary Kendrick Pope who will graduate from Duke in 2009 will be carrying on the long Few tradition with his beloved alma mater His grandchildren are Mary Kendrick Pope Laurie Sims Pope Elizabeth Randall Pope Caroline Hawley Few Randolph Jackson Few William Steed Rollins Carlton Louise Rollins and Sarah Preston Rollins In addition he is survived by a nephew william Preston Few II and wife Paula of Raleigh nieces Frances Few Usry and husband William of Durham and Ellen Few Anderson and husband McCutcben formerly of Raleigh Several other nieces great nieces and nephews of Mr Few reside outside of North Carolina In addition to his parents Mr Few was also predeceased by his four brothers William Few Lyne Starling Few Kendrick Sheffield Few and Yancy Preston Few Mr family will forever be grateful to the staff members in the Biltmore Wing of the Olsen Center at The Forest at Duke for their loving kind and gentle care that he received from each of them Their love and respect for him was reciprocated and each one of them was very special to him He always was so appreciative of everything that they did for him making his last days the very best they could be They are very special people A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm cm Thursday October 16 2008 at the home of Steed and Louise Rollins 33 Oak Drive Durham A memorial service will be held at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church 504 West Chapel Hill Street Durham at 11 am on Friday October 17 2008 A reception will follow immediately after the service in Whitford Hall at the church The family requests that in lieu of flowers friends may make a contribution to Duke Memorial United Methodist Church designated for the Randolph Reamey Few Memorial Fund Howerton Bryan Funeral Home is assisting the Few family DweUe Larrabee 85 passed away at her residence in Durham cm Wednesday October 15 2008 Surviving are her husband Charles Larrabee children Giles Larrabee Sarah Larrabee Meg Sonderlund Charles Larrabee Alexander Larrabee Lucy Pierce Jean Ricca' and brother George A Dwelle Arrangements made by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas Floyd Marshall DURHAM Mr Floyd Marshall 77 of 610 Bacon SL died Sat- urday October 11 at Durham Regional Hospital His service will be held at 1 pm Saturday Oc-rj tober 18 2008 at Inner Court Ministries 3216 Guess Rd Interment will follow in Glenn view Memorial Park Mr Marshall worked at NCCU until he retired He is survived by four sons Harold Johnnie Floyd and Robert and two daughters Linda and Patricia The family will receive friends Saturday October 18 2008 from noon to 1 pm at Inner Court Ministries Arrangements by Burthey Funeral Service Alvin Tingen DURHAM Mr Alvin 'Hiwa Tin gen passed away peacefully on Sunday October 12 2008 in Macon Ga following a brief illness He was born in Durham on September 13 1955 He grew up and resided in Durham until April 1995 when his employer the former American Tbbacco Company required relocation to Reidsville and finally Macon Ga where he retired in 2005 He was a faithful and respected employee for 30 years greatest enjoyment was his tremendous love of sports He spent countless hours over his life fishing boating and participating in water sports activities He was an avid fan of NASCAR Auto Racing and Ice Hockey Alvin was present at every event possible cheering on his favorite drivers and teams He leaves behind to cherish his memories his devoted wife Angela Tingen of Macon Ga his beloved mother Daphine Tingen of Durham his brother Roger Tingen of Durham He was preceded in death by his father and friend Willis Tingen Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 am at Hudson Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Willie Tteachey officiating Burial will be in Wood-lawn Memorial Park The family mil receive wishes to extend deepest heartfelt thanks to his family and friends for their prayers visits support and encour- see OBITS page C3 served as a Naval Officer during WWII where among other places he was stationed in Hawaii for over two years After the War he remained in the Naval Reserve where he oversaw the building of the Naval Armory on Foster Street in Durham After his naval career he worked for Esso (now Exxon Mobil) before returning to Durham in 1954 to start a career as a commercial real estate developer Included in his residential and commercial projects was Lake-wood Shopping Center in Durham Lakewood was one of the first shopping centers in the state and Mr Few managed it until it was sold in 1986 In addition he ran several family-owned corporations and at the time of his death was president of Kendrick Estates Investment Corporation He had the distinction of holding one of the oldest North Carolina real estate license and was a former member of the Durham Board of Realtors A member of the Durham Kiwanis Club since 1955 Mr Few served as its president in 1976 and received its Distinguished Service Award in 1981 He was a life-long member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church and a long-time member and past president of the Spence-Kale Bible Class Always active in his church he served as President of the Administrative Board as a Trustee as the Finance Committee Chair as well as holding various other positions Beyond his local church he served the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in several capacities including a member of the Board of the Methodist Retirement Homes and chair of the Council on Finance and Administration for several years For 26 years Mr Few was an active member of The Methodist Foundation which in June of this year awarded him The Saints of God to recognize 'Outstanding Christian Stewardship and within the North Carolina Conference Additionally for many years he served on the Board of Visitors of the Duke Divinity SchooL In the Durham Community he served as Chairman of the Draft Board and as President of the Duke-Durham Alumni Association was a charter member of the Durham Sports Club and board member of the Sales Marketing Executives Club of Durham was active in the Boy Scouts and served as the Campaign Chairman for the Occo-neechee Council For his beloved Duke University he was a Charter Member of the Iron Dukes a Charter Member and President of the Blue Devil Club and he was a loyal and devoted fan of Duke Sports particularly basketball and football The only games he missed in Wallace Wade Stadium were during WWII and then two games due to poor health This game in November would have been his 80th Duke-Carolina Football Game Despite his declining health he attended all three home football games of this season In addition he was a Charter Member and board member of the THangle Chapter of the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame In 2005 the All-American Football Foundation awarded him the American Football Fan for his life long loyalty to Duke Sports Mr Few was also an avid tennis player and 1 I DURHAM AUtnt Tripp Campbell DURHAM Mrs Allene TWpp Campbell 88 for-- merly of US 15-501 North Chapel Hill died October 14 2008 at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro She was retired from Blue CrossBlue Shield where she worked as a claims processor Mrs Campbell was a member of ML Gil- ead Baptist Church Surviving are a son Larry Campbell a daugh-j ter Shirley Mauer and two sisters Helen Bras-J ington and her twin Clar- ene Campbell The service celebrating
