Tried and tested: 5 Bonfire Night mug recipes you can make in the microwave (2024)

Bonfire night is the perfect time to huddle up with friends and family to tuck into warming grub after hours watching fireworks in the cold.

Ideally, we’d all be eating jacket potatoes straight from the bonfire, but a lot of us don’t have a garden, letalone the means (read: motivation) to create an actual bonfire.

Never fear, we’ve tried and tested easy, but indulgent, recipes to get you into the spirit of things.

Best of all, they can all be made in a mug and popped in the microwave, giving you plenty of time to remember, remember the fifth of November.

Plus, with a convenient handle, you can carry them outside with you. Marvellous.

1. Mug O’ Mac and Cheese

Tried and tested: 5 Bonfire Night mug recipes you can make in the microwave (1)

This recipe from Kelsey Banfield is the easiest recipe ever and involves minimal ingredients: pasta, cheese, water and milk.

Yeah, it’s basically just cheesy pasta, but there’s something very cosy and comforting about its gooey simplicity.

It can be whizzed up in less than ten minutes, so you can tuck right in after watching the fireworks. Yum.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup pasta
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Method

  1. Combine the pasta and water in a large mug or bowl.
  2. Microwave on high for two minutes, then stir. Warning: water may overflow, but that’s okay just wipe it with a cloth.
  3. Repeat this for at least 2 to 4 more minutes, stirring at each 2-minute interval. The water should absorb completely and the pasta will be cooked through. If the pasta needs another minute it is okay to add one more teaspoon of water and microwave for another minute.
  4. Remove it from the microwave and stir in the milk and cheese.
  5. Microwave for another minute. Stir the cheese thoroughly into the pasta.

Tried and tested: 5 Bonfire Night mug recipes you can make in the microwave (2)

It’s true, you can cook risotto in the microwave. No more slaving over a hot stove constantly stirring. Oh the endless stirring.

Mind you, while the Brit & Co recipe says 10 minutes, it definitely takes a little longer than that and you do have to take it out to stir every two minutes.

But it’s still ridiculously easy and tastes just like your normal risotto.

So you can impress your mates and pretend you’ve been hard at it over the hob, when actually you’ve been watching the fireworks from the kitchen window.

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

4.Quick Mulled Wine

Tried and tested: 5 Bonfire Night mug recipes you can make in the microwave (4)

I got very excited when I saw a microwave recipe for mulled wine, but it turns out there’s a very good reason why everyone does it on the stove.

It tastes a little grim and there’s something very off-putting about seeing bits of cinnamon floating on top your drink.

In all fairness, I skipped the brandy (being at work and all) and I used some very cheap wine and very cheap orange juice. Maybe with better quality products this would work better.

But my recommendation is to stick with the stove, here’s a recipe do it to properly.

Ingredients

  • cup red wine
  • 12cup orange juice
  • 14cup brandy
  • 2tablespoons honey
  • 12teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1pinch nutmeg

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large heatproofmug.
  2. You can alter the proportion of orange juice to red wine according to taste.
  3. Microwave on highfor 1 1/2 – 2 minutes until hot but not boiling.
  4. Stir.
